Seated in sound-proof rooms facing the Chamber, the Language Service officers listen intently to every word that is being said and simultaneously interpret the speech from English to Malay, Mandarin and Tamil, and vice-versa.
Parliamentary interpretation of the debates is provided so that Members and the public attending the debates can listen, using headsets provided at their seats, in any of the four languages that they are familiar with.
The job of a Language Service officer is often challenging, requiring excellent language, analytical and comprehension skills, including an up-to-date knowledge of current issues and news.
